Links to Scientific Research on the Benefits of Viewing Nature Imagery

Is it really possible that many of the benefits we experience from being outdoors in nature could also be experienced by viewing nature scenes on our televisions? While obviously it is preferable to actually be outdoors in nature, many of us are unable to have immediate outdoor access as an option when needed for reducing anxiety, “clearing our heads”, or increasing positive emotions. There is actually extensive scientific research available on the positive benefits of viewing nature scenes either as photographs or films. NatureStream.tv was founded by photographers Olof & Elizabeth Carmel as a way to enhance any environment with the positive benefits of nature’s beauty.

According to U.C. Berkeley professor Dacher Kelnter, "More than 100 studies have shown that being in nature, living near nature, or even viewing nature in paintings and videos can have positive impacts on our brains, bodies, feelings, thought processes, and social interactions. In particular, viewing nature seems to be inherently rewarding, producing a cascade of position emotions and calming our nervous systems. These in turn help us to cultivate greater openness, creativity, connection, generosity, and resilience". Dr. Keltner’s new book is now available that provides extensive research on the importance of Awe in Nature: The New Science of Everyday Wonder and How It Can Transform Your Life

Books that consolidate the research in this field include Your Brain on Nature, The Nature Fix, and The Biophilia Effect. There is an extensive list of reference studies in the appendix of Your Brain on Nature that provide an exhaustive review of available research.

In addition, BBC Earth has commissioned studies that evaluate the benefits of viewing Natural History Programming.
